Growing Together, Serving Better

It was rightly said that before you run, you must know how to walk properly. Similarly in chess before aiming for the biggest title that ever existed (Grandmaster GM) one must know the basic piece movement, points of pieces, opening principles, middle game tactics and end game strategies. While the title is very big and the journey is too long, with the expert guidance, consistent practice and learning from mistakes everyday it’s still achievable.
Every Champion was once a beginner, who was learning the basics of chess. What separates a champion from others is their will to learn and commitment to improve everyday.
If you’re a beginner wondering how to go about this game and achieve grandmaster title this step by step roadmap will guide you about the entire journey.
Just like any other mind sports, before becoming champion mastering the basics is as important because if the foundation is strong, nothing is going to work out. Before learning advance strategies learn about:
1. How does each piece move?
2. Value of every chess piece.
3. Basic chess rules
4. Check, Checkmate and Stalemate
5. Special Moves like Castling (to protect the king), en passant etc
"In chess, the difference between a good player and a great one isn't knowing more tricks, it's mastering the basics so well that every move has purpose."
Practicing daily, even for 30 minutes over the board (OTB) or via online chess platforms can make a big difference.
Many players think that chess is all about capturing pieces. While capturing pieces can help winning material, the main objective is to checkmate the opponent’s king. If the goal is clear it will help in understanding the fundamental concepts.
Understanding the main objective of the game is the first step towards becoming a Champion.
"Every great chess move begins with knowing the ultimate goal, CHECKMATE."
Strong knowledge of fundamentals of the game doesn’t mean that you need to learn thousands of moves, understanding a few basic ideas would be enough.
* Opening Principles: Learn how to?
1. Control the centre
2. Develop your pieces early
3. Protect your king
4. Connect your rook
5. Avoid unnecessary moves and play strategically.
* Middle Game Tactics: Do practice of common and known tactical patterns like
1. Forks and Skewers
2. Pins
3. Double attacks, Discovered attacks etc
* Endgame Strategies: Study about basic endings like
1. Pawn promotion
2. King and pawn endings
3. King and rook checkmates etc.
"Great players don't outgrow the fundamentals, they refine them."
"Small efforts repeated every day create extraordinary results."
In chess and in life, the winner is not the one who is doing more, it’s the one who chooses to show up consistently even when there’s no motivation left. Consistency is much more important than longer practice sessions occasionally. If you’re a beginner, even two games on a daily basis will help you improve your chess skills over time.
Build a routine and include the following habits
1. Practice at least two games on a daily basis.
2. Learn one new concept daily and imply it in your games.
3. Learn from opponents' moves.
4. Analyze your own games to learn from mistakes.
5. Solve 3-5 puzzles daily to strengthen problem solving skills.
"Talent gives you potential. Consistency helps you achieve it."
While winning and losing is part of the game, it’s vital to learn from every game whether you win or lose.
You can ask yourself a few questions after every game.
1. How can I plan my moves better?
2. Was my king safe during the game?
3. Which tactical pattern can I apply in the future ?
4. What are my mistakes which I shouldn't repeat to be better in the game?
Analyzing your own games will help in improving and avoid repeating the same mistakes again and again.
"The strongest players don't avoid mistakes, they learn from them."
Solving chess puzzles is one of the most effective ways to become a champion; it helps you spot discovered attacks, pin skewers and recognize winning opportunities during the game. It helps you think in the right way, avoid blunders and make better decisions during the real game.
"Puzzles teach you to see possibilities before your opponent does."
Although we cannot deny the benefits of self learning but joining a chess academy or finding a right coach will speed up your progress
An experienced coach will help you identify your mistakes, and make an effective and workable plan according to the learner’s pace and retention capacity. At the same time a right trainer will prepare you for the tournaments and make you stay motivated during difficult phases and help you comeback gracefully after setbacks and losses without getting demotivated.
"You can learn chess alone. You grow faster with the right coach."
Having a FIDE Rating will help in understanding your strength and for that purpose having FIDE ID and participating in a FIDE Rated tournament is very important.
With a FIDE ID you’ll be able to:
1. Participated in FIDE Rated events.
2. Your performance in OTB Tournaments can be tracked globally.
3. You’ll be able to play against rated players from all over the world.
The more tournaments you’ll play the more your performance and rating will increase over time and with higher rating you can get the chance to play with higher rating opponents and big events.
"A FIDE ID is more than a registration, it's your passport to the world of competitive chess."
"The climb to a higher rating begins with consistent effort, not perfect games."
Since your FIDE rating is the key point to identify your growth. Becoming a champion is much more than knowing more moves. Similar to life, in chess also there’s no shortcut to becoming a champion. Players should focus on improving in every aspect of the game from opening strategies, positional understanding, planning ahead, time management, rating and most importantly mental resilience as champions are not built overnight, they go through thousands of games, lessons, and continuous improvement to become better players and ultimately a champion unlike other players.
With the increase of rating, start participating in bigger tournaments including National Championships, Open FIDE Rated tournaments, FIDE International events etc as after one point playing in local tournaments only wouldn’t be enough. With each tournament you’ll learn new strategies, face even stronger opponents and learn valuable lessons that can’t be learned from practice alone.
"Every norm earned is a step toward history."
Earning an Official FIDE title is a dream of every dedicated chess player. With your skills improving you can work towards the following international chess titles.
CM Candidate Master,
FM FIDE Master,
IM International Master and
GM Grandmaster
Usually people get these titles after years of hardwork, tournament success and consistent learning. Becoming a Grandmaster is a dream of thousands of chess players around the world that reflects dedication, discipline, and excellence over many years.
To become a champion, learning just about the game itself and strategies is not enough. You really need to master a few habits that support long term success which includes:
Regular practice,
Stay healthy and hydrated,
Controlling of emotions,
Learn from everyone and every game,
and exercise daily.
"One good habit can change your entire chess journey."
