Chess is the Globally recognized sport with proper system, titles and rankings.
In the world of Chess, we have heard terms like GM, or CM mentioned right before any player's name. These acronyms are TITLES awarded by FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs). These titles are the most precious awards by FIDE ( The Official World Chess Organization ) which any Chess player can earn and each title has its own significance and has a proper process which needs to be followed to earn any of them.
As a complete beginner, you might think that What is FIDE? What are these titles, how can we get them ? Whether you’re a student, an aspiring player in this field or just an individual who wants to explore the world of chess for knowledge, understanding the "ladder" of Chess can help you clarify the process.
The best part of these titles are once you earn them they’re for a lifetime.
FIDE stands for International Chess Federation, which oversees and manages the World of Chess, sets the rules for Chess, manages Chess competitions globally and also awards ratings and titles to players.
International Chess Titles are the most prestigious designations any Chess enthusiast can earn. These can be secured by playing FIDE Rated Tournaments.
In simpler words these recognitions are the level of expertise and generally splitted into two categories:
1. Open Titles ( available for everyone )
2. Women’s Titles ( exclusively awarded to women chess players )
Though women have their own category but still Open ranks can still be earned by women also.
FIDE Awards following Chess Titles to the Chess Contenders
1. GM GrandMaster ( most difficult title to achieve )
2. IM International Master ( the second - last title and the and could be a major milestone that can be achieved by serious players )
3. FM FIDE Master ( an achievable target for dedicated and consistent Club players too )
4. CM Candidate Master ( The entry Level international Title )
The structure of women’s title is same but they just need slightly lower rating threshold
1. WGM Woman Grand Master
2. WIM Woman International Master
3. WCM Woman Candidate Master
The path to get these titles consists of two main ladders, which are “Elo Ratings” and “Norms”.
Player must earn specific ratings in order to get these titles
For Example:
1. GM - 2500
2. IM - 2400
3. FM - 2300
4. CM - 2200
Ratings don't need to be permanent, they just need to be achieved at least once to earn the title.
Initial credentials like CM and IM can be achieved purely by reaching specific ratings for example if a candidate has a rating of 2300 he will automatically become a FM ( FIDE Master ) but for Grand Titles Participants must achieve something that is called Norms.
Norm is basically a certificate of exceptionally well performance in an International Chess Tournaments. To achieve a single norm, Player must meet the below mentioned criteria
1. The tournament must have 9 rounds.
2. The rating of opponent must be above certain threshold ( for example, it should be 2380+ for a title of GrandMaster norm )
3. The contender must have played in 3 different Federations ( National ) ensuring that he is performing on a Global level.
4. The Individual’s performance during the event must be equivalent to the target title's rating level (e.g., a 2600 performance rating for a GM norm).
5. He should score enough points in the tournaments
GM: Minimum ratings of 2500 and 3 GM norms are required for GM title
IM: For IM Minimum rating should be 2400 and 3 IM norms are needed.
In some conditions people can earn Grand Honors instantly without following a process, without norms and without applying for it.
Winning Continental Championship
Performing very well in Junior World Championship
Strong performance in Olympaids
Participants usually don’t apply for the FIDE ranks themselves, once they achieve rating and/ or norms, tournament organizers submit their results to FIDE which is verified by National Federations, FIDE reviews and approves and this is how FIDE ranks are awarded.
1. You never lose a title, once earned it’s for a lifetime
2. Ratings can be increased and decreased, but it doesn’t affect the title in any way
3. High Level Competition is required for big titles
4. Norms are the crucial part of big titles.
The journey to secure International Chess Titles isn’t easy but the path is very cleared and structured and with proper training, consistency, daily practice and tournament participation even Casual player can aim for these titles and achieve them as they say:
~With consistency and hardwork, anything is achievable in this world. -Unknown
