Norway Chess 2026

A Beginning of a New Era in Elite Chess

  1. Introduction: NORWAY CHESS  is known as one of the most renowned events in the World of Classical Chess featuring World Top Grandmasters competing in Classical Chess and Armageddon tie breaks. The tournament is mostly held at the end of the Month of May. The idea of Norway Chess officially began in the end of 2011 and the organization was set up in 2012. But 2013 was the first year in which Grandmasters officially set down to compete in this event for the very first time and Sergey Karjakin was the winner of the First Edition of this event.
  2. Movement of Norway Chess to Oslo: This year’s version was historic because For the very first time in the 13th year history of Norway Chess, this  tournament was played and moved in the Capital City of Oslo, Deichman Bjørvika Library  from Stavanger ( its first home ) brought together all the strongest Chess players together to showcase their skills and win this year’s trophy.

Tournament Format & Dates

The Oslo Event featured  two categories ( Open Section and Women’s Category ) with 6 players in each category and  lasted for 12 days from May 25 - June 5 with 10 rounds of intense play along with two days of proper rest.

The World Class tournament is famous for its unique  format to avoid quick wins and draws and encourage fighting for trophies . The Double Round Robin format was followed which means each player will play with the same opponent two times, one time as white and second time with black pieces .

Scoring was decided  according to this system

Classical win =        3 Points

Classical Loss =       0 Points

Draw + Armageddon Win = 1.5 Points

Draw + Armageddon Loss=     1 Points

Highlights of Norway Chess 2026

The biggest achievement that will be discussed for many years in the future is one won by R Praggnanandha defeating many Elite and best classical Chess Players. The winner engineered a four game classical winning streak to close out the event.

During the event the contenders who faced defeat against him are:

Most Difficult Tournament for Carlsen

Considering the fact that Magnus has won this event 7 times from the year it began. Like every year fans were expecting him to win on his homeground but the overall event ended up being extremely difficult for him since he suffered several classical defeats .

The Norwegian Chess Player defeated D Gukesh in the final round and his standing is 4th  after the final round in the Open Section .

Praggnanandha became the First ever iIndian player to win Norway Chess which will be considered as the historic achievement for Indian Chess.

Norway Chess Women 2026

Both events ( Norway Chess - Open Section & Norway Chess - For Women ) have the same format with equal prize funds which clearly shows the event’s commitment to gender equality at such top level that too in a professional Chess which is amazing.

The Event was equally interesting in this category showcasing the bravest female chess players in the world .

Kazakhstan’s chess Player Bibisara Assaubayeva  secured the victory with a round to spare.
